Media Dimensions

The following table shows the 13 conventional media dimensions by which a medium can be analyzed. The analysis of a single medium in total isolation is not as meaningful as analyzing many to start seeing the patterns that an analysis can reveal. These come from my post-grad course in Human Computer Interaction. The prof was Gilbert Vanburen Wilkes IV.

Synchronous/ Push/ Recorded/ Passive/ Local/ Dialog/ Unidirectional/ Rich(er)/ Persistent/ Oral/ Document/ Ambient/ Digital/
Asynchronous Pull Live Interactive Remote Dissemination Reciprocal Lean(er) Ephemera Written Data Local Analog

By way of illustration, the following table is my initial analysis of media that I provided as a part of my course work in HCI back in 2006. The left-most column are media examples. The top row are the possible categories. The intersections show how each of the example media are categorized.

Synchronous/ Asynchronous Push/ Pull Recorded/ Live Passive/ Interactive Local/ Remote Dialog/ Dissemination Unidirectional/ Reciprocal Rich(er)/ Lean(er) Persistent/ Ephmeral Oral/ Written Document/ Data Ambient/ Local Digital/ Analog
Lapidary Epigraphy asynchronous push recorded passive local dissemination Unidirectional Lean Persistent Written Document Local Digital
Satellite Telemetry Synch pull Live passive remote both maybe maybe both lean ephemeral hmm data ambient digital
Graffiti on a men's room wall asynchronous push Recorded passive local dissemination unidirectional varies persistent written document local varies
Anonymous love letter asynchronous push Recorded passive local not sure unidirectional varies persistent written document local digital
Chat room synchronous both Both active remote both reciprocal varies either can be both both, either both, either digital
Email spam Asynchronous Push Recorded passive Remote Dissemination Unidirection (unless recipient is stupid) varies Persistent Written Document local Digital
Insect Pheromones synchronous both Live passive local both ? unidirectional - maybe should look this up hmm ephemeral hmm data ambient analog
Sonar pulse synchronous pull Live active remote dialog both really lean ephemeral hmm data ambient digital
Corporate Logos asynchronous push Recorded passive local dissemination unidirectional unless public reaction counts varies persistent written hmm hmm analog
Transcripts of a wire tap synchronous pull Recorded passive local dissemination unidirectional lean persistent written either local digital
Web page asynchronous both Both both remote both either, both varies ephemeral either/both either hmm hmm
Car alarm asynchronous push Live passive dissemination lean ephemeral hmm data hmm hmm
