I have come to believe - and this is as important as it gets - that analogy is at the core of cognition. The notion was knocking around in my head for a good couple years and then I hit on this lecture by Douglas Hofstadter. He has thus done me an incredible favour by validating the notion for me. I had created arguments, but now I can just point people at this video.
After seeing it, I ran out and pre-ordered his new book: Surfaces and Essences. Wow. Is it dry. I thought it was just me, but a science reviewer (I wish I had noted who it was) found the same problem with the book. Oh, well. I'll find stuff in it when I need to.
